About Us

Who We Are:

Asheville Community Yoga is a donation based yoga center located in Asheville, NC. The center offers yoga classes, special community events, teacher trainings, student immersions and workshops. All classes, workshops and events at the center are free for people who truly cannot afford to pay. For people who are able to pay, the suggested “Love Offering” amount is $5-$15 for regular classes and $15+ for special events and workshops. By offering donation based yoga classes we hope to make yoga accessible to everyone.

The center is funded through generous donations from students, local businesses and organizations. This center was built on the foundation of Karma yoga (selfless service.) ALL the teachers at Asheville Community Yoga practice Karma Yoga and teach completely for FREE!  Oh Yeah!!!

The center is becoming a melting pot where people from different socioeconomic backgrounds, cultures, and ages are coming together to practice. We see students, seniors, servers, bar tenders, doctors, attorneys, accountants…all showing up and practicing next to each other.

The center is state of the art and equipped with everything you’ll need from mats and blankets to a heated hardwood floor and a serene atmosphere. The first thing many people say as they walk in the door is, “wow, this place is so beautiful, it’s like a mini retreat walking in here.”

In a very short time Asheville Community Yoga has grown from one person offering free yoga classes two nights a week, to a community of over 2000 members with a team of teachers, board of directors and staff offering up to seven classes daily, special community events, wellness workshops, monthly service projects, student immersion programs and teacher trainings.

Future plans for Asheville Community Yoga include outreach to local schools, hospitals and rehabilitation centers, low cost childcare, healthy eating/cooking classes and support groups. The center strives to be a demonstration of what service is and encourages its members to be involved and to serve.

Yoga has the power to transform individuals, families and communities.  At Asheville Community Yoga we believe in this transformative power and strive to make it accessible to everyone regardless of their socio-economic status. We believe that by practicing yoga regularly ones physical, mental and spiritual health is greatly enhanced. This has a powerful ripple effect, which radiates through the family, community, and work force in ways that positively influence everyone.

Mission:

Asheville Community Yoga’s mission is to serve the community by offering donation based yoga, health services, and community outreach, while inspiring our members to bring their “yoga” out into the world in the form of selfless service.

Our core values that guide our vision:

  • Selfless service (Karma Yoga)
  • Sustaining a supportive compassionate community
  • Operating with openness, honesty and accountability
  • Adhering to the most basic yoga wisdom, Yama’s (ethics) and

Niyama’s (restraints) which include: kindness, truthfulness, honesty, selflessness, non-possessiveness, purity, contentment, discipline, mindfulness, integrity and devotion.

Vision:

Our vision is to provide a safe supportive space where individuals and families come together to create a compassionate and sustainable community, surrounded in an atmosphere where they are inspired to grow physically, spiritually and emotionally.

We believe that when individuals change, their families and communities also change. We want to inspire this change by reminding individuals of the love, compassion and energy that dwell within them, guiding them to health, happiness and well-being.
