Joy began her yoga practice in NYC in the front row of a extremely hot Bikram class. After years of pushing herself to the limit, she discover there was another approach to this practice. She began taking classes with Dharma Mittra and Matt Giordano where she learned the benefits of breathing into postures with grace and ease. This shift encouraged Joy to attend a month long training in the jungle of Costa Rica at an intentional community called Pachamama in 2012. From there Joy’s travels led her to Lake Atitlan in Guatemala to esoteric studies at Las Pyamides, then India to work as a volunteer with Off the Mat, Into the World with Seane Corn and Suzanne Sterling after raising $20,000 to instill awareness in the community and to help girls who had been sold into sex slavery.
While in Rishikesh, India, and then onto Thailand, Joy studied with various Yogis and spent numerous days in multiple Ashrams where her love and appreciation for the practice of yoga deepen and it became her spiritual practice. In 2013, Joy found herself on an island of the Phillipines for a 2 month long yoga training, where she was given the opportunity to expand further. As Joy traveled, she was grateful for the gift of yoga that was always there for her. And now she is tickled to be able to share this gift and herself with the Asheville Community Yoga students. It is her intention that we support, grow and learn from each other with grace and ease. And remind each other to laugh, be silly and have fun.
