A huge thank you goes out to volunteer of the Month Ben Miller! Ben is not only dedicated to his practice on the mat, he is also strong in his practice off of the mat. Ben has been a karma yogi here at the studio for many years now and is always willing to help with anything from gardening to building to mopping the floors after class. We are fortunate to have Ben as such an active member of our community! To learn more about Ben, read on:
What was the experience with yoga that got you hooked? I get hooked on to yoga all the time. Lately it’s been the meditation during movement that has been so rewarding.
What inspires you to continue yoga? I’m inspired to do yoga because it’s increased my capacity to live in my body and honor it. Also, of course, community!
What is your favorite pose? My favorite pose lately is downward dog. It’s the beginning of so much!
What is your most challenging pose? My most challenging pose is Savansana. Letting go ain’t always easy. That and forward folds!
What is your favorite time/place to practice? My favorite time to practice is early morning or late afternoon. My favorite place is the YMCA…. Kidding it’s ACY!
How has yoga changed your life? Yoga has given me a path for deeper truth and love.
Do you have a favorite yoga book or video? I’ve enjoyed Swami Satchidananda’s “To Know Yourself”
What are 3 words you would use to describe yourself? Goofy, self-reflective, caring
Is there a recurring theme that runs through your yoga practice? Breath! Both try and relax.
If you could just share one practice that has helped you the most, what would it be? Meditation. It’s kinda a big deal 😉
What is your current or all-time favorite song or artist for a yoga playlist? Tycho all day every day
What is your mantra? I breath as my mantra. If i’m having a hard time focusing I start to count with my breath.
Do you have a passion other than yoga you’d like to share about? I think Somatic experiencing and yoga work really well together! Also I’m a huge fan of Marshall Rosenburg and NvC. Check it out!!
How did you find Asheville Community Yoga? 8 years ago, Michael’s class.
Do you have a spirit animal? If so, what is it? My spirit animal is a courageous dog. Chases mailman but doesn’t bite.
What’s your most embarrassing moment in a yoga class? I once wore a high-heat, compression shirt in a warm vinyasa class because I thought it would look cool. I knew men had to keep their shirts on but I became so hot that I needed to take it off. My back was incredibly sweaty. We started to do sit ups in class. The way my back curves during sit-ups traps air underneath it. As I “sat-up” the pushing of the trapped air created the noise of the sweatiest, loudest fart….twice. And there I was, half naked and pouring sweat, so obviously the source.
Don’t worry Ben, you are the source of much more than that. You are also a source of incredible light and love, and we are so grateful for your contributions and presence here. If you see Ben around, make sure to say hi!
