We are so excited to be honoring Fatimah Shabazz as our Student of the month. Fatimah walks into the studio with an infectious smile and positive attitude. She is regular in her practice, coming in 2-3 times per week and has been since she first started attending Asheville Community yoga just over a year ago. Here’s what Fatimah has to say:
What was the experience with yoga that got you hooked? Experiencing and remembering the power and benefits
of the breath…Transformative! Also, I have been aware of yoga for years, it never resonated with me, not physical enough for me then. And then, last year just before my 70 B-Day, on the cover of AARP magazine, the headline was: “Turning 70 and the benefits of Yoga”…that was my cue, I am grateful for that headline and for Asheville Community Yoga.
What inspires you to continue yoga? The continuation of taking a stand for self, my well being, nurturing self & making the commitment to self. I enjoy being physically fit the best way I can. Also, it gives me an opportunity to notice and shift the dance I can go through each class day. The mind trips I can create…i.e. talking myself out of going, or reasoning myself out of going OR being totally determined to getting myself prepared to make the journey to class, not always
easy, however, always rewarding.
What is your favorite pose? My favorite pose is Shavasana, it is for me the gift to self for the work & the efforts, from getting prepared to go to class to end of class.
What is your most challenging pose? Downward Dog
What is your favorite time/place to practice? Favorite time – early mornings, starting my day feeling strong and nurturing self. Favorite place to practice – Asheville Community Yoga. I enjoy connecting & meeting other attendees, it broadens my experiences of yoga.
How has yoga changed your life? Not changed my life so much, more of offering a new and different physical process. I have always been physically active in other formats.
What are 3 words you would use to describe yourself? Outrageous, Awesome, Creative
Is there a recurring theme that runs through your yoga practice? Honoring self…it is ok and allowed. It is the gift from self to self.
If you could just share one practice that has helped you the most, what would it be? The breath
What is your current or all-time favorite song or artist for a yoga playlist? I am not aware of any artist per se, I do enjoy the music on Monday’s Yoga for Senior’s prior to class, and I always enjoy the music in all of Wendy’s classes.
What is your mantra? Have not created one…yet!
Do you have a passion other than yoga you’d like to share about? Yes, playing percussion & singing Jazz, R&B with
a little Blues on the side.
How did you find Asheville Community Yoga? Research -A sistah’ girlfriend told me about ACY months before I made a choice to even consider doing yoga. It was an immediate YES!
Do you have a spirit animal? If so, what is it? Akita
What’s your most embarrassing moment in a yoga class? My Goddess chain coming apart (not really an embarrassing moment, do not believe anyone noticed)
Thank you for spreading your genuinely happy vibe to all of us! We are truly blessed that you practice with us Fatimah, thank you for showing up so fully.
