October Service Project: Collecting Items from the Wish List for Helpmate
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. On average, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States. During one year, that equates to more than 10 million women and men. On a typical day, there are more than 20,000 phone calls placed to domestic violence hotlines nationwide.
Helpmate provides services to victims of domestic violence in Buncombe County. They offer a 24 hour hotline, emergency shelter, individual and group counseling, court advocacy, and preventive education for at-risk groups including youth groups. All services are provided to women and men. Helpmate, Inc. does not discriminate based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, age, sexual orientation, or gender identity.
Throughout the month of October, we will be collecting items from their Wish List. Please remember to only bring items on the list, as there are many items they cannot accept. We could also use two volunteers who would be willing to take the full bins to Helpmate and return them back to the center to be refilled. Please contact wendy@ashevillecommunityyoga.com with any questions or to sign up to help.
