In Loving Memory of Gary Sager

On June 28, 2017, Gary Sager, beloved teacher, practitioner, and true friend to our community, died after taking his life. He will be missed.

gary sagerAfter completing our teacher training program in 2013, Gary began teaching a Yoga for Seniors class on Tuesday mornings. His intention was to share his journey with like-minded and positive-thinking seniors in an inclusive and special space. His regular students became deeply connected through Gary’s offerings, banding together each Tuesday to practice and uplift each other in the class they named ‘Yoga Church’.

Dedicated to service, Gary volunteered with the yoga center’s various construction projects over the years, including the Studio B and Studio C expansions. Gary was integral in the construction of Studio B, he built the kitchen, and he even created the beautiful desks in the offices. His presence will always be felt here in this sacred space he held dearly.

Gary loved hiking and being in nature, and treasured his relationships with others. Gary loved his children, grandchildren, and his wife who preceded him in death.

Gary always arrived at the center with an infectious smile, arms open wide for big hugs. We felt so lucky to have him by our side on this spiritual path. When Gary was honored as teacher of the month this past year, he shared his love of the following quote: “The meaning of life is to find your gifts, the purpose of life is to give them away.”

Thank you Gary for your sharing your gifts. Thank you for your presence, service, and deep love. We will always remember you.

In Loving Memory of Gary Sager

We plan to create a beautiful outdoor water feature with space for community to gather in dedication to Gary. He loved waterfalls, being in nature and our sacred yoga center, and we hope to honor Gary’s memory. As we arrive and leave the yoga center, we will remember him and our gratitude for all the gifts he shared with his fellow teachers, students and our community.

If you would like to contribute to creating the outdoor space, please donate here.

Help Is Here

Asheville Community Yoga’s Wellness Expansion

Men's 1

Congratulations to YOU! We are pleased to announce that Asheville Community Yoga purchased the building in October of 2016. This special place now belongs to our entire community!

Through community fundraising, we raised the $150,000 needed to make the downpayment of the building and received a community loan of $85,000 to purchase the adjacent land at our existing location. Thank you to our amazing community for rising up to meet us wherever and whenever we need help and are ready to grow.

Now, instead of paying rent, Asheville Community Yoga will be paying off a mortgage. This will create a sustainable future for the yoga center and allow us to continue to serve the community for many years to come. We believe everyone can benefit from the healing practice of yoga, and aim to make it accessible to everyone, regardless of financial constraints, physical challenges or mental barriers.

We are excited to begin renovations on the building this coming winter and expand our offerings in 2017 and beyond! If you would like to be involved, please sign up at the front desk to volunteer and help build our new space.

This is a nurturing and safe space for so many of us to come breathe and practice. Every time you take a class, volunteer, or donate, you are contributing to the continuation and growth of the center. Thank you for being part of it!
