Meet our April Teacher of the Month, Jerome Smith! Jerome is an ordained Pandit in the Himalayan Tradition. In addition to teaching meditation classes and workshops here at Asheville Community Yoga, he is also currently the spiritual director of Asheville Meditation Center, a nonprofit spiritual organization based here in town.
He received his yoga teaching certification through the Himalayan Institute and is a registered teacher through Yoga Alliance at the E-RYT 500 level. His studies include a two-and-a-half year intensive training program in India. As a teacher of the Himalayan Tradition, Jerome teaches, guides and initiates students on behalf of the lineage in various subjects such as Raja Yoga, Tantra, and Vedanta.
Jerome is a great teacher, making these ancient practices accessible to beginners and keeping them fresh for seasoned practitioners. He embodies the wisdom he teaches, and his presence is soothing to the soul.
When asked about his practice and his teaching, this is what Jerome has to say:
“My first real exposure to yoga was spending a year at the Himalayan Institute in the Self Transformation Program. There, I learned yoga as a complete system which included asana, pranayama, meditation, philosophy, diet and lifestyle practices. During that time, I met my teacher and knew it was the start of a lifelong journey. As my practice deepens, it inspires me to continue on the path of Yoga. Meditation has been the most helpful yoga practice I have found. Teaching is my way of giving back to the lineage which I am privileged to be an instrument of. A quote from my teacher, ‘Yoga is skillful action,’ is a theme that runs through my yoga practice throughout the day.”
